Understanding the Darkweb Marketplace
The darkweb marketplace represents a hidden part of the internet that is not indexed by traditional search engines. This encrypted portion of the web can only be accessed using specific software, most commonly through Tor.
PPE median price then increased back to the March level in July, when general worldwide availability of masks for the general population decreased the demand for small quantities of products. We report an analysis of the listings price for COVID-19 guides on scamming in Fig. As the world of technology continues to evolve and expand, so do the possibilities of the dark web. Darknet markets, in particular, have been at the forefront of the underground economy, allowing users to buy and sell goods and services anonymously. However, with the increasing scrutiny from law enforcement agencies and the rise of new technologies, it’s important to consider what the future of these markets might look like.
Key Characteristics of Darkweb Marketplaces
By leveraging innovative strategies and technologies such as undercover operations, international cooperations, darkweb monitoring tools & crypto-forensics tools etc. this clandestine criminal wildlife trafficking enterprise can be dismantled. The attributes “Listing body” and “Listing title” in Table 4, representing the title and description of the listings, were used to select the COVID-19 categories in Table 1. Every selected COVID-19 listing contained either a word in the “Listing body” that matched one keyword in the first set or a word in the “Listing title” that matched one keyword in the second set. The rationale behind this choice was that the listing title was usually more precise on the product sold, whereas the body might contain promotions of other items the vendor was selling in other listings. At the same time, the vendor might mention COVID-19 in the body for various reasons, which we analysed in the main text.
After Silk Road’s demise, a number of other darknet markets emerged to take its place. These included sites like Agora, Evolution, and AlphaBay, which quickly became popular among both buyers and sellers. However, many of these markets were short-lived, as law enforcement agencies around the world began to crack down on them and shut them down one by one. In 2017, AlphaBay, one of the largest and most popular darknet markets at the time, was shut down by law enforcement, leading to the arrest of its founder and the seizure of millions of dollars worth of assets. Darknet markets first emerged in the early 2010s, as a response to the growing demand for anonymous online marketplaces where people could buy and sell illegal goods without fear of being caught by law enforcement.
COVID-19 specific listings totaled 788 unique products and represented less than 1% of our dataset. The majority of COVID-19 specific listings offered PPE (45.1%), followed by medicines (28.9%), guides on scamming (12.6%), web domains (6.3%), medical frauds (4.3%), tests (2.2%), fake medical records (0.4%) and ventilators (0.3%). Most COVID-19 specific listings did not report the quantity sold (64.8%) or shipping information (73.5%). Almost half of these listings invited potential customers to communicate via email or messaging applications, like WhatsApp (49.6%). Although direct communication fosters a trustworthy vendor-buyer relationship and may lay the ground for future transactions outside DWMs, it also exposes users to higher risk of being traced by law enforcement [91]. Dark Web markets are the number one destination for cybercriminals who want to sell malware, ransomware-as-a-service, and databases of breached data.
There are also differences between the items sold between vendors, as evidenced below in Figure 5 with the common vendors g3cko, drunkdragon, blackmarket, and harleyquinn. Listing of marketplace categories for Tor2dor, Dark0de, Nemesis, and Bohemia. In each marketplace shown guides takes a top 3 category, and never takes up less than 9.32% of listings. Hacking appears as a top 3 listing in both Tor2dor and Bohemia, not falling below 9.32% of listings on said websites. The x-axis lists the vendor’s chosen username, and the y represents the number of entries on each platform.
Darkweb marketplaces have several defining features:
- Anonymous Transactions: Users can conduct business without revealing their identities.
- Cryptocurrency Payments: Digital currencies like Bitcoin are typically used, making transactions harder to trace.
- Variety of Offerings: Products can range from illegal drugs to counterfeit items and hacking services.
- Community Feedback: Buyers and sellers often use ratings and reviews to build reputation.
We analyzed the number of listings for all major cryptomarkets currently active. These numbers suggest that White House is the new leader in terms of activity, with over 29,000 listings for sale. This is more than twice its nearest competitor, Dark0de, a market established only a few months ago.
Popular Darkweb Marketplaces
Several marketplaces have gained notoriety within the darkweb community:
- Silk Road: One of the first and most well-known darkweb marketplaces, which was shut down in 2013.
- YouSuck: A marketplace that emerged after Silk Road, known for its variety of illicit products.
- AlphaBay: A popular marketplace before its seizure by law enforcement in 2017.
